Superconducting Mechanical Design Engineer II

The Facility for Rare Isotope Beams (FRIB) will be a new scientific user facility for nuclear science, funded by the Department of Energy Office of Science (DOE-SC), Michigan State University (MSU), and the State of Michigan. Under construction on campus and to be operated by MSU, FRIB will provide intense beams of rare isotopes (that is, short-lived nuclei not normally found on Earth). FRIB will enable scientists to make discoveries about the properties of these rare isotopes in order to better understand the physics of nuclei, nuclear astrophysics, fundamental interactions, and applications for society.

Position overview

The Mechanical Engineer II will execute work to meet superconducting magnets project milestones and performance objectives (cost, scope, and schedule).

Assigned scope

Supports the Superconducting Mechanical Design Group on magnet design, production fabrication, and assembly.

Major position responsibilities

  • Use 2-D and 3-D drawings and models produced by designers and engineers in order to create detail drawings.
  • Extensive use of GD&T.
  • Produce and document effective design solutions by developing concepts, performing engineering calculations, and creating CAD designs/details.
  • Provide engineering support for fabrication, assembly, and commissioning of technical equipment.
  • Interacts with project leader and subject matter experts to transform technical requirements into design solutions.
  • Present design solutions to stakeholders and convene design reviews to obtain stakeholder feedback and endorsement.
  • Assist project leader and subject matter experts in reviewing design layouts, budgets, project documentation, construction, testing, modification of hardware and software, and/or the installation of sub-systems.
  • Provide technical direction to support staff and students.
  • Use software systems to keep track of drawing approvals and revisions.
  • Use plotters and printers in order to make necessary copies of drawings for distribution.
  • Maintain design and detail drawing files and records.

Qualifications

Required

  • The job requires a bachelor’s degree in engineering or physics; three to five years of progressively more responsible or expansive work experience in fabrication techniques, cryogenic systems, electronics, mechanical and electronic drafting, and computer systems; and may require experience in the use of CAD and/or related engineering systems, including file transfer; experience in the use of exotic metals, including knowledge of their properties, in the fabrication and assembly of sophisticated research equipment; or an equivalent combination of education and experience.
